With a roster stocked full of talent, the MAST boys and girls cross country teams have gotten off to an electrifying start, all things considered. Because the team was marked by inexperience, there was not much hope for success at the outset of the season.
However, after two fairly successful meets, team spirit is running high. On September 2, 2014, the boys and girls varsity team competed against Coral Gables Senior High School and Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy. The boys varsity team won 2nd place, while the girls varsity team won 1st place.
On September 18, 2014, at the Youth Fair Invitational, the boys varsity team competed against 35 other schools and won 11th place, while the girls varsity team competed against 29 other schools and won 15th place.
Much of the cross country team’s regular season success can be attributed to their offseason preparation. Over the summer, everyday with the exception of Sundays, the team met in front of MAST to run the bridge at 8:00 a.m. sharp.
The summer conditioning seems to have made a difference.
“Besides improving our times, running during the summer in such hot conditions helped to improve the team’s mental fortitude,” boys varsity captain Arturo Toro said.
Now running with a renewed sense of confidence, Coach Pena has made mention of the very real possibility of the team making regionals.
