On October 21, sophomore Ivan Shestopalov went to Argentina to compete in the sailing world championships. This is Shestopalov’s third year competing in the competition, placing seventh in 2012 and 12th in 2013. This year Shestopalov hopes to achieve his dream of winning the race.
Shestopalov first got into sailing when he enrolled in a summer camp for the sport. His older sister had been fond of sailing, which encouraged Shestopalov to try it out. At the camp, he discovered he enjoyed the sport and decided to continue with it. It has been eight years since he began to compete.
During these eight years, Shestopalov has competed in countless local regattas as well as many national and world competitions.
Along with his two visits to the world championships, Shestopalov has competed in six North and South American continental championships. Shestopalov came out in first place in the last two South American championships, in 2013 and 2014.
To train for his competitions, Shestopalov practices three times a week in at the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Coconut Grove.
The young sailor does not see himself quitting the sport any time soon.
“I want to sail through college and see where that gets me,” Shestopalov said.
