New school musical soon playing at MAST Academy

Musicals are a classic and entertaining art form that have brought joy to numerous audience members. The MAST Drama Club’s new project is nothing less as they embark on recreating the classic Broadway musical, Anything Goes.
Junior Carolina Sanchez de Varona is both starring in and student directing the performance.
“This is the first show I’m student directing. I am very confident about the musical,” Varona said.
Varona stars in the musical as Reno Sweeny, a night club singer on the S.S. American. Also aboard the ship is Billy Crocker, a stowaway in love with heiress Hope Harcourt, who in turn is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh.
Harcourt is played by Freshman Olivia Corderi and Evelyn Oakleigh is played by Senior Carlos Fernandez.
Rehearsals began in late November and have continued into February.
“We are right on schedule. It’s really fun, the students are learning about culture in the 1930s,” performing Arts teacher and Artistic Director of the musical Cayce Benton said, regarding rehearsals.
In the past, Benton has produced well received musicals such as Bye Bye Birdie and The Drowsy Chapel.
The musical was scheduled to be showcased February 25-27, but it has been postponed to March 11, 12, and 13.
